I was hoping to find Inon's recording of the Tchaikovsky concerto when I did his interview last week, but alas, there wasn't one. I hope he will record it, too, for he was remarkable.

Thanks for sharing, Phil, and glad you enjoyed the concert!

I had not heard of Inon Barnatan before seeing him listed on the Jacksonville Symphony schedule and I had not been aware that Tchaikovsky wrote a second piano concerto. I began preparing by trying to find a recording of the Second and had a difficult time doing so. I listened to the Concerto recording on the 75 mile drive to Jacksonville to see the concert and found the music interesting and enjoyable but Inon Barnatan's performance far exceeded the recording. I am sure I will hear much more of him over the years and I hope he records the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 2. He is an impressive pianist.

Hi Lisa,

Yes, with the cost of printing, not to mention the time it takes to design these brochures, it is easier and cost-effective to simply put the schedule online. Although some do have their brochures available online, which is the case with a few of the ones I add to my blog (New York Philharmonic, for one). But when a brochure is in the hands of subscribers and potential ticket-buyers, a hard copy still remains a useful marketing tool. It prompts people to go online, see more detail and purchase tickets.

I will continue to alert my readers about these premieres and composers. I appreciate the input!

Being an active composer in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, in my brief tour of symphony orchestra's of the Midwest's websites, I can't find that orchestra's are printing brochures anymore! Rats! I want to know when and where world premiers or US premiers are taking place and about those composers. Thank you.

My first hearing of the Rachmaninoff Concerto #2 was a Sviatoslav Richter recording from the 1960's. I believe it was done in Russia with a Russian conductor, maybe Kondrashin. The opening chords gave me such a thrill, I will never forget the feeling. I decided that I must perform the work. I made my concerto debut with the second in San Antonio in 1971 and in 2003 I had the opportunity to record the concerto with the Slovak Symphony in Bratislava. (Crys1005). Together with the Rhapsody, I still believe that these are some of the greatest works in our piano literature and I never tire of performing or teaching them.

I prefer later Rachmaninov, actually. A bit less of the heart-on-sleeve passion and a bit more irony thrown in.

Of course, there's the Paganini Rhapsody, but I'm most fond of the Piano Concerto #4 (Earl Wild/Jascha Horenstein is just the best in this work) ... and the Symphonic Dances (Neeme Jarvi's Chandos recording with the Philharmonia Orchestra is great).

@David--hmmm. Not sure. There's "Liebesfreud" (Love's Joy) for violin and piano? Another thing you might try is this link to Amazon with Rachmaninoff's complete recordings: http://amzn.to/pohQZc
See if any of those titles look or sound familiar? Let me know if you find it!
